Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument Rehabilitation

  • Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument Rehabilitation

Project Overview

Located at a prominent corner in Capitol Hill, the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument was constructed in 1820 after the original structure was destroyed by the British Army in 1814. It later served as the headquarters of the National Women’s Party (NWP), playing a pivotal role in securing the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the building was donated to the National Park Service (NPS) in 2016 to be transformed into a national monument and museum. However, the structure was in urgent need of renovation to meet modern safety and code standards. HPM was selected as general contractor for the Phase 2 renovation, which included comprehensive mechanical renovation, roof replacement, electrical and fire sprinkler upgrades, as well as architectural rehabilitation. An award-winning project, the renovation effort was coordinated with the National Park Service, Architect of the Capitol, Capitol Police, and the Senate Sergeant of Arms.
